Reminder: City of St. Charles Final Leaf Collection for 2011

There is only one remaining leaf pick up date for residents to capture those last few leaves before the winter weather arrives in St. Charles. The schedule for the final leaf collection is as follows:

East Side of the River

  • South of Main St. – Nov. 28
  • North of Main St. – Nov. 29

West Side of the River

  • South of Main St. – Nov. 30
  • North of Main St. – Dec. 1

Eligible participants are reminded to place their leaves on the parkway by 6:30 a.m. on their scheduled day. Leaves also can be placed in yardwaste bags, which will be collected on the normal refuse collection days through Nov. 30.

The City of St. Charles has approximately 100,000 trees, of which 80,000 are private trees. The leaf pick up program began this year on October 26, with all areas of the City receiving four collections throughout the season. In addition to the variety of ways the city uses to get the word out about program details, residents can always find information on City’s website, www.stcharlesil.gov.

There are numerous alternatives for discarding leaves:

  • Mulch fallen leaves with the lawn mower. But be sure the mulched leaf material is not excessive. It should blend nicely with the turf and not accumulate so much that it suffocates the grass.
  • Start a compost pile; other amendments will need to be added as leaves on their own won’t make compost.
  • Place in flower and plant beds as a soil amendment/conditioner.

For more details on the leaf collection program visit the City’s website, www.stcharlesil.gov/services/leaf or call the Public Works office at 630-377-4405 with questions.
