A Guide to Getting a Burger in St. Charles
In honor of National Hamburger Day (the second one), we decided to find the places in St. Charles where you can get a great burger.
St. Charles has no shortage of restaurants and bars serving up fantastic food. One thing that shapes the menu at most eateries is hamburgers. From prime beef to frozen patties, the hamburger is an iconic food that many people of all ages enjoy.
July 28 actually is the second National Hamburger Day. The first one is in May—the whole month is a celebration of the burger, according to our research—but why not have two? Here's what we found on our tour of joints in St. Charles that offer a prime burger.
- Jambalaya, located near Bourbon Street within the Pheasant Run Resort, has a "build-your-own burger" section on their menu. Fresh Angus Beef is grilled to your liking, then topped with your choice of three toppings.
- Chili's devotes an entire section of their menu to its "Big Mouth Burgers." The restaurant's original Smokehouse burgers are usually a safe bet and come with many topping options (think lots of gooey cheese and bacon) but, Chili's newest burger creation, the Hatch Chilie Cheeseburger, will make chilie lovers' mouths water. With mild green chilie sauce, jalapeno jack cheese, cilantro lime mayonnaise, and homemade pico de gallo, the Hatch Chilie Cheeseburger is a southwestern creation filled with big flavors.
- The Colonial Cafe isn't just known for ice cream creations—the chain also serves up some of the best diner food around. The restaurant's menu offers many options and a good burger is a part of that variety. All of Colonial's burgers are made from fresh Angus beef and grilled medium-well on a brioche bun.
- When driving through the east side of St. Charles, you'll often catch a glimpse of the St. Charles Place sign. As one of the area's best places to get a great steak, you can be assured that the burgers are just as delicious. Each patty is made with a half-pound of fresh beef tenderloin that's ground in-house. All the usual suspects are on the burger menu, but what really shines is the Bistro Burger. Made with St. Charles Place's signature cognac sauce and served on a French baguette, the burger is like eating a piece of steak on bread.
- As St. Charles' self-proclaimed Chicago Blackhawks bar, the Eastside Pub and Grill has a menu fit to feed the Hawks front line. Nine varieties of burgers are on the menu, and offered at around $6 each. The Blackhawk burger is rubbed with Cajun seasoning and topped with blue cheese crumbles, bacon, lettuce and tomato.
- Bistro One West's executive Chef Doug D'Avico creates some of the best gourmet burgers in downtown St. Charles. The Signature Bistro One West Burger comes grilled to perfection and topped with a creamy lobster salad on fresh ciabatta bread. D'Avico always uses the freshest beef available and high-quality artisan cheeses and bread.
- The lounge inside Rox City Grill at the Hotel Baker serves a Kobe Beef Burger that's topped any way you'd like it. The menu also serves a Beef Tenderloin Slider on a Brioche bun with a roasted shallot mayonnaise.
- The Beehive Tavern and Grille has a menu filled with great bar food. The Build Your Own Beehive Burger lets diners pick one option from an ample lists of cheeses, toppings and spreads. Each burger is made from a half-pound of Angus beef and served on a toasted bun.
- The Filling Station is one of St. Charles' most popular bars. Affectionately known by locals as "The Filler," the food is as exciting as the ambiance. Each burger is made with a half-pound of ground sirloin, and comes served with your choice of potato salad, cole slaw, chips or hand-cut fries and a pickle.
- Burgers are a small feature on the menu at Alley 64, but they certainly don't lack flavor. The burgers are made with certified Angus beef, and come served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and Alley 64's signature coleslaw.
- McNally's Irish Pub has two delicious burgers, both worth mentioning. The Holy Ground Burger is made with a half-pound of Angus beef and is topped with an herb mayonnaise. The Chieftain Burger features a half-pound of Kobe beef and is served on a pretzel roll. Both burgers come with your choice of cheddar, Irish Cheddar, provolone, Swiss, American or Gouda cheese.
- The "famous" burgers at Pub 222 are all made with fresh black Angus beef. They come topped with options that include mushrooms, cheese and bruschetta. All of their burgers are served on gourmet rolls.
- The Tap House Grill has a menu with more than a few burger options. From little sliders to big beef burgers, there is something for any appetite. Tap House's Stuffed Burger is a molten creation with a center that oozes with spicy jalapenos, Cheddar and Monterrey jack cheeses.
- Rookies All American Pub and Grill has some of the best food specials around. The burgers are often on special for just $1 and come served with chips, (cheese and fries are usually extra). But there's more than $1 burgers on the Rookies menu—15 different styles of burgers are available.
- Real Time Sports Bar offers well-known live musical acts as well as one of the biggest burgers in St. Charles. The Big Time Burger is made with two, half-pound Angus beef patties, six pieces of bacon, aged Cheddar cheese, grilled onions and sauteed mushrooms.
- For a huge Texas taste, you can try the Tex-Mex Extreme Burger at Gabby's Kitchen. The chef takes a half-pound, hand-formed patty and charbroils it, then it's topped with Gabby's famous chili, guacamole and grilled jalapenos.
Editor's Note: This list was intended to be as exhaustive as possible. We would gladly add anything not included.
