This is one of the times throughout the year that I cleanse my own closet. As a personal and fashion stylist, I spend a lot of time helping others Cleanse their own I make sure to make time for my own. After personal experience I've come up with a few of my favorite tips on organizing your closet to be more functional. After you've purged any items that need to be purged, and gotten any tailoring or alterations done it's then time to have your closet as organized and functional as possible. Here are some of my favorite tips:
1) Match your Hangers
It may seem like a small thing, but having all the same hangers can make a HUGE difference in space. Everything will hang evenly and some hangers can be harsh on the shoulders of your clothing. Places like Costco sell great hangers in bulk for a great price. You can even make a list or book with pictures of outfits made from your wardrobe (this is something I offer to my clients and have had amazing feedback on this!)
2) Rotate Seasonally
Store the clothing that's out of season (i.e. in the Winter store your Summer clothing), it makes space for your in season clothing and keeps from taking up space in your closet with items you aren't going to be wearing.
3) Store Outfits
A great way to save time in the morning, storing outfits pre-made in your closet can be a great way to keep things organized. Not to mention it can prevent that "I don't know what to wear" feeling in the morning before work.
4) Utilize Storage Resources
There are tons of options in regards to storage in stores now. Find something that works for you and your space, just be sure that it's something that's easy for your to find your clothing in. Consider see-through bins with labels - these are my favorite (not just for my clothing closet, I use these for business purposes as well).
5) Outfit Planning
As a stylist, my goal is to help people have less stress when getting dressed everyday. I've found this to be a great tool to use. Get a hook that can hang over a door, either in your bathroom or closet (wherever is convenient for you). Use this hook to hang your outfit the night before, trust me picking out your outfit the night before can be incredibly helpful and save time in your morning routine.
How do you organize your closet it? What helps you to have a better functioning wardrobe? I'd love to hear your ideas!
