St. Charles Police Officer to Take the Plunge for Charity

Officer Adam Stander to Participate in the Lake Bluff Polar Plunge March 1

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently made headlines for their promises to participate in the Polar Plunge in Chicago. Here in St. Charles, our own Officer Adam Stander from the St. Charles Police Department will brave the freezing temperatures of Lake Michigan Saturday, March 1 for the Lake Bluff Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

This is the fourth year Officer Stander has taken part in this fundraising effort. The event is held at Sunset Beach in Lake Bluff and is one of about 20 held throughout the state to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

If you’re at the event, it will be easy to pick out Officer Stander who is plunging with a group from Kane County—they will be dressed as M&Ms. Part of the Polar Plunge tradition is to have a costume contest before the big dip. Officer Stander is joining representatives from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office, the Carpentersville Police Department and two local Special Olympics athletes.

Officer Stander is motivated by the athletes: “Seeing the athletes there and knowing they get up every day thinking about their sport and competing, that keeps me coming back each year. Without the funds these events raise, the athletes wouldn’t have these opportunities.”

Interim Chief of Police Steve Huffman is proud of the support the St. Charles Police Department has shown Special Olympics Illinois: “In the last five years through various fundraising events, we have raised $105,000 for Special Olympics, with a total of $170,000 raised since 2002. St. Charles has been ranked among the Top 15 Fundraising Agencies statewide four of the last five years. It’s all thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our citizens, local businesses, and the hard work of our volunteers.”

Officer Stander has this to say to encourage others to participate in the Polar Plunge: “It’s not as cold as you think.”

Just ignore the giant chunks of ice.

Every “plunger” has their own webpage that offers information about them and their fundraising totals. For more information about the Polar Plunge or to visit Officer Stander's page, visit http://www.firstgiving.com/soilltorchrun/2014-polar-plunge-lake-bluff
