(SAINT CHARLES) Vero Voce School of Performing Arts is pleased to announce that seven of its voice students have been honored in the 2014 Hal Leonard Competition. With over 1,100 entries this year, Sarah Heylmun (Batavia) was recognized as a semi-finalist in the High School Voices - Art Song category. Sarah is a 15 year old sophomore at Batavia High School. Ashley Fritz is a freshman at Rosary High School in Aurora. Abageal Phelan is an eighth grader at St Peter School in Geneva. In the High School Voices – Musical Theatre category, Katelyn Jassoy (St Charles) was a semi-finalist. Katelyn is a junior at Rosary High School in Aurora.

The Hal Leonard Vocal Competition is the only event of its kind for singers up to age 23 for all of North America, children through college undergraduates. All students mentioned here have been studying with Ms. Harkins for between 2-5 years.

“Voice is something you study for a lifetime, Harkins says. “There is no permanent quick fix when it comes to singing. I've come across many parents and students who think that a student can pop in for a quick coaching or two and that will make them ready for auditions or performances, but that isn't the way it works. In general, these students are in the studio for one hour or more every week, no matter what else is happening in their very busy life at that time. There are many very talented individuals in this world, and the ones who succeed are those who work hard on cultivating their individual talent day after day, week after week, year after year.  I am very proud of the work my students do and the continual support their families provide them. And I am very excited for all of my students in that they have gained recognition from all their discipline and hard work.”
