Minor Rain Delays on St. Charles Road Project

Here's what to expect this week on East Main/Route 64 in St. Charles.

Last week’s rains caused some minor delays for landscaping and asphalt work on the East Main Street/Route 64 reconstruction project, but construction is continuing as scheduled., according to James Bernahl, the St. Charles Public Works Department engineering division manager.

The biggest change this week, according to Bernahl, is the lane reductions at the intersection of Smith and Kautz roads, where crews will do roadway replacement work on the north and south sides of East Main Street at this intersection.

Other construction activity to watch for this week, according to Bernahl, include:

38th Avenue to Route 59

  • Beginning Monday, June 3, 2013, crews will be performing the final lane reduction for eastbound and westbound traffic at East Main Street and the Smith/Kautz roads intersection. The lane reduction should last two weeks, after which eastbound and westbound traffic will resume normal traffic patterns.  The lane reductions will allow crews to complete the rest of the exterior roadway patches on both the north side and south side of East Main Street at this intersection.
  • Crews are scheduled to begin preparing the roadway sub-base and begin placing the bituminous asphalt base for the new concrete roadway over the next few weeks, mainly on the far eastern limits of the project.
  • Placement of the aggregate sub-base is expected to continue on the north side of East Main Street between the entrance of Pheasant Run and Powis Road for the next two weeks. Crews are expected to continue to regrade the parkway within this same section. This work was delayed due to wet weather.
  • Crews will continue working on the regrading of the landscape medians between 38th Avenue and Kautz Road. This work also was delayed by wet weather.
  • Storm sewer work is scheduled to continue between Keil Street and Powis Road over the next two to three weeks, weather permitting.
  • Work on the new bridge near Powis Road is expected to continue through the next few months, with work at the bridge due for completion by mid-July. Work activities now are focused on the center lanes of the bridge; traffic is being diverted to the new outside lanes.

7th Avenue to Kirk Road

  • Work is expected to continue on the removal of the existing roadway on the north side of East Main Street continuing east of Cedar Avenue. Preparation has begun on the sub-grade for the new roadway section between 7th and 13th avenues. Placement of the bituminous layer in this section is expected to start Tuesday, June 11, 2013, weather permitting.
  • Curb installation work will continue on East Main Street between Tyler  and Kirk roads. Framing and preparation for the installation of the new curbing on the east side of Dunham Road is complete. Included with this concrete work will be permanent concrete patching for the proposed roadway widening.
  • Sorm sewer improvements will continue on the north side of East Main Street from 13th Avenue to Tyler Road and move east toward Dunham Road over the next few months.
  • Work will continue for the next three to four weeks on the forming and placing of retaining wall  No. 2 and No. 3. Retaining wall No. 2 is near the intersection of East Main Street and Cedar Avenue. Retaining wall No. 3 is on the north side of East Main Street, about 500 feet east of Hunt Club Drive.
  • Pavement grinding and removal work will continue, focusing primarily on the north side of East Main Street from 7th Avenue toward Kirk Road for the next few weeks.
