St. Charles Special Olympians to State Games

Athletes depart for state games Friday morning.

Nine St. Charles Special Olympians and 23 other athletes from the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association leave Friday morning for the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games.

“This event is the culmination of all the hard work and recognition of the successes our athletes have received throughout the season,” said Ben Berg, FVSRA athletics coordinator. “This weekend is truly a highlight for the athletes and coaches.”

The games are held June 15-17 at Illinois State University. Qualifiers include a record-high 15 athletes from the FVSRA swim team and 100 percent of the powerlifting team. Special Olympics athletes must receive a gold medal at a qualifying event to compete in the Summer Games.
