Red Gate Bridge Construction Begins April 9

Construction of the long-awaited Red Gate Bridge is slated to take place in 2012. The bridge is expected to open in December, 2012.

In the next few weeks, construction activity at the site of the future Red Gate Bridge will ramp up again as McHugh Construction will begin the work to build the roadway and bridge structure. This work follows the completion of preparatory work last fall by Herlihy Construction including clearing the site, grading, and construction of a bridge over the Fox River Trail.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has spent the past several weeks reviewing the bid results for the project. The agency has awarded the contract to the low bidder, McHugh Construction. You can view a copy of the memo awarding the contract to McHugh Construction here. IDOT will maintain a role in administering and overseeing the work, in conjunction with representatives of the City of St. Charles.

McHugh is mobilizing equipment, materials, and trailers to the project site. That work will continue this week. Also taking place this week will be the installation of construction signs and message boards to notify the public of upcoming construction activity.

During the week of April 9, tree removal along both sides of Route 25 will commence (within the IL 25 right-of-way) and driving steel test piles on the east side of the river bridge will be initiated.
