Health & Fitness

Onward and upward...

St. Charles is a wonderful community and I leave with many fond memories and a feeling of accomplishment.

After 8 years in service to the City of St. Charles, I have decided to resign as City Administrator.  I have enjoyed my time with the City, but have decided that it is time to move on to the next professional opportunity. I have accepted the position of Village Manager with the Village of Schaumburg and will start there on August 31st.

I began my career with the Village and we lived there from 2000-2005, so this is a homecoming of sorts. Schaumburg has always been a great community and I look forward to enhancing it under the leadership of Mayor Al Larson and the members of the Village Board.

St. Charles has been a wonderful community to work for. I have enjoyed projects that have been both challenging and rewarding. However, when an opportunity to work as Village Manager in a community like Schaumburg is offered, you don’t pass it up.

I offer my appreciation and thanks to so many members of the community that I have worked with. St. Charles is fortunate to have such dedicated residents, businesspeople, and community volunteers. So many of you have reached out to me over the past few days to express your disappointment in my departure, offer congratulations on my new opportunity, and to wish me well. Thank you so much for your kindness and concern.

Many of you have questions:

  • What accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • What is your biggest regret?
  • Is there anything that you would have liked to have seen completed during your tenure?
  • Do you have any recommendations for St. Charles going forward?
  • What advice do you have for your successor?

I may have more to say on those questions in the weeks ahead as I take my "farewell tour." For now, I simply refer you to the text of my resignation letter that was formally submitted to Mayor Rogina earlier this week:

Pursuant to Section III (A) (2) of the Employment Agreement, please accept this letter as notice that I am resigning as City Administrator of the City of St. Charles effective August 31, 2013. I have been offered, and accepted, the position of Village Manager of the Village of Schaumburg.

The decision to leave St. Charles was not an easy one, and was only made after careful consideration. I discussed this opportunity with my family and friends. After doing so, I am confident that it is the best decision, both professionally and personally.

Over the past 8 years, a great deal has been accomplished to enhance the reputation of St. Charles as a community that is admired and an organization that is respected. I am proud to have played a role in working as a member of the City organization to achieve so many successes.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the excellent staff at the City of St. Charles. They are the lifeblood of the organization and have made my employment with the City a rewarding experience. I would also like to express my admiration for the very talented executive team. The City is fortunate to have such devoted professionals serving the residents and businesses of St. Charles with distinction.

I want to express my appreciation to you, former Mayor Donald P. DeWitte, and all members of the City Council for the support that I received. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with such dedicated elected officials.

St. Charles is a wonderful community and I leave with many fond memories and a feeling of accomplishment. St. Charles is also a community with significant untapped potential. I hope that current and future City leaders will strive to realize that potential.

Sincerely,

Brian A. Townsend
