2013 St. Charles Businesses Openings Outnumber Closings
New businesses open in gateway areas and downtown, and includes new industrial businesses.
Business closings during the first half of the year were significantly lower than the number of new businesses that opened from January through June, according to the St. Charles Economic Development Department.
A list of openings and closings indicates the city saw 39 new businesses open in St. Charles from January through June, while 26 businesses closed during that same period. The list showed nine new businesses emerge in the city’s West Gateway area, 10 in the city’s central business district, and 11 new retail businesses and nine new industrial businesses opening in the East Gateway area.
During the same period, the city counted 26 business closings.

The difference is startling, because many focus on business closings, as well as empty retail space, as reflecting the economic condition of the city. The city’s lists of business closures and openings are not conclusive — St. Charles does not, for example, issue business licenses, which is one method some communities use to precisely track business conditions.
Still, the lists of openings and closings an indication that more positive things are developing in the city’s business community than some moght be led to believe. The lists were compiled by former Economic Development Coordinator Michael Mertes before he left his position with the city.
