Borders Announces Closing of Remaining Bookstores; Geneva Spot Expected to Follow St. Charles Location

A reported 11,000 jobs also are on the chopping block.

Five months after Borders announced that its would be among hundreds to close, the bookstore chain will shutter its remaining stores throughout the country.

On Monday, the Huffington Post is reporting that Borders will close its last 400 stores and eliminate 11,000 jobs. The chain reportedly will sell itself to a group of liquidators after having failed to find a buyer to bring it out of bankruptcy proceedings.

The Randall Road location in Geneva had survived the previous round of closings only to face this .

One representative of the property owner Sperry Van Ness said that a temporary business, Halloween City, had signed a lease for the retail space. The lease would last from August to November.

The retail addition is seen as “great for the economic vitality of the city,” said Lori Hewitt, president of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, earlier this month.

As for Borders nationally, a liquidation group will begin liquidations possibly as soon as Friday, according to the Huffington Post article.
