Bulldog Ale House Sets Sights on Downtown St. Charles

Sports bar won’t be opening at former Bennigan’s on East Side, owner says.

Bull Dog Ale House owner Matt Ahmeti has decided against opening in the former Bennigan’s pm St. Charles’ East Side and instead is seeking a site downtown, MySuburbanLife.com reports.

Ahmeti had planned to open in the former Bennigan’s site in April or June but changed his mind. He would not tell MySuburbanLife.com what changed his mind, but he did say he is looking at two downtown locations.

Ahmeti received initial approval of a B3 liquor license to open a Bull Dog Ale House at the former Bennigan’s, 3615 E. Main St., . Bull Dog Ale House has locations in Carol Stream and Roselle. The former Bennigant’s is in the city’s East Side business corridor and has remained virtually empty since 2008.

Obviously Mr. Ahmeti hasn't been reading the local papers regarding the subject of more bars in downtown St. Charles. This news ought to rile some folk! Guess he could move into the old Scotland Yard building or Magoo's.

Dear Mr.Ahmeti, Are you crazy? You are two days from opening. This new location is what the Far Eastside residence need. Look at the competition in Downtown St.Charles. then, look at the competition on the East. You are guaranteed to win..........as we will, also. thanks Charlemangne

Would it be wrong to have an 'annex' location?

Just another let down. No Ice rink yet, No Chinese Buffet. MidAmerica needs to get their crap together and get a Trader Joes, Fresh Market, Dunkin Donuts or Binny's up in there.

Mr. A must have some kind of lease or agreement on the Bennigan's property, how does he get out of that? The east side of town definitely needs a place like this and I think he's making a mistake. Has he thought about the parking issues? And if he's thinking about a Rookies type family place downtown St. C isn't the place for that. With all the the young families on that side of town it's a no brainer. When I worked on the east side of town I couldn't believe there wasn't a Dunkin Donuts.

Agreed lois. I work at the great clips in the same Parking lot and I'd say 80% of the clientele ask us when bulldogs is going to open. This question is from the guys (or girls) looking for a place on the east side to watch the game on the big screen while having a beer or two and also from the families who are sick of the 5 restaurants they have to choose from on this side of the river. I WISH I had the money to invest. Done properly this is a no brainer. Walk Into bdubs or rookies on any given day and you'll see both of these cases. Curious on what the reasoning to not open is after the 5+ months I've watched almost daily of remodeling going on. Opening a "family" restaurant downtown is fine, but as john said how bout an annex?! Lol!

I wonder if all the talk about creating a business district on the east side and charging all the businesses an additional sales tax was an influence here.

I'm not sure what the annex means nor the reference to bdubs is. The major competition to the Bennigan's location is TGIF and maybe On the Border and definitely Portillo's. Those are some pretty heavy hitters when it comes to family restaurants. I'm just not seeing a family restaurant/bar fitting into downtown St. C. Gabby's and Rookies pretty much have that wrapped up even tho they're west of downtown a bit. Maybe Mr. A should just pack up and head back to Roselle and write it off as a bad idea. Seems like he had a bad plan to begin with and is confused as to how to fix/change what he began. I'm sure his investors are not pleased.

This is very disappointing. I was looking forward to Bulldogs on the east side (even though I live on the west side). They look to have an extensive menu and the location seemed great, especially because there is parking. Parking downtown is limited and can be a royal pain. If they go ahead with the decision to move to downtown, I won't be going there. Is there some specific problem with the Bennigan's site or its landlord??? If not, I think the owner is a fool to want to move downtown.

I'm with you, Helen! Mr. A really needs to rethink his whole plan before he attempts to jump into a downtown StC location. Plus, with the way his staff is dressed (like the Tilted Kilt staff) that's all downtown needs with all the testosterone running amok down there already!

Went to the Spotted Fox for dinner and drinks last weekend. They did a very nice job rehabbing the space. Friendly employees and the food was quite good. I would certainly go back.
