Come for the 'Vu,' Stay for the Food

The RendezVu brings an upscale, but unpretentious menu to a fantastic riverside location.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: The RendezVu, or “The Vu”, as it is known by locals, has been opened since 2006. Their move to the banks of the Fox River in 2008 solidified them as a Batavia staple in good eats and local entertainment.

Decor: The decor in the basement dining room is minimal, and has tables and high top’s for seating. The small nook in the rear gives diners a more intimate feeling with exposed brick walls and a wall mounted fish tank. The bar shares the dining room area and features hand made wrought iron shelving to hold bottles and glassware. The upstairs area, called The Bulldog Lounge, is available for party rentals and special events. There is a pool table with some seating, as well as another bar. There is also an outdoor dining area which overlooks the river.

The Drinks: The RendezVu always has superstar bartenders on staff to mix up unique drinks or the common staple libations. There is a full line of beers on tap or in the bottle, and a basic but quality wine list.

Appetizers: While this restaurant serves more than just your standard bar fare, their appetizer menu features some old favorites. Potato Skins with cheese bacon and sour cream ($5.95), are a good choice for a snack or meal starter. For a classier option try the Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp ($7.50), which comes with marinara sauce; or the Goat Cheese with Marinara ($6.95) served on toast points.

Entrees: The London Broil ($9.95) with bordelaise sauce, is a tasty option at a great price point. For seafood lovers, the Shrimp Scampi ($16.95) is bursting with rich flavors, and a generous portion of shrimp. If pasta is what you’re craving, try the spicy Penne Pasta Diablo ($8.95); for a small up charge you can add your choice of chicken, beef, or shrimp. The Cod Sandwich Po-Boy ($6.95) is delicious, and features batter fried cod served on a hoagie roll with creole tartar sauce.

Side Dishes: All entrees come with your choice of soup or salad, and a side dish. The side dishes include; rice pilaf, french fries, smashed potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, cole slaw, onion rings, sauteed mushrooms, mixed vegetables or a baked potato. For 25 cents each, you can add cheese or bacon to your side dish.

Desserts: For a traditional taste of dessert, try the Creme Brulee ($3.95). The Brownie Sundae ($4.95), is a rich and sharable finish to your meal. It comes with a large brownie topped with ice cream, chocolate sauce, caramel, and whipped cream.

Service: The servers and bartenders at the RendezVu are always friendly and helpful. During busy dinner hours there can be a wait for a table, especially in warmer months when it’s desirable to sit on the outdoor patio, but the staff will do their best to accommodate your wishes as quickly as possible.
