Fat Rosie's Taco Bar Quietly Closes in St. Charles

The leasing agent for the property told St. Charles Patch he already has several parties interested in the space.

A trendy St. Charles taco bar that opened less than two years ago has quietly and suddenly closed.

The leasing agent for the shopping center on West Main Street that was located at told St. Charles Patch on Tuesday that restaurant management left sometime over the weekend.

"They moved out, unbeknownst to us," said Ryan Corcoran, CEO and property manager of Corcoran Comercial Real Estate.

Corcoran said was informed over the weekend that the restaurant had been virtually abandoned and that it came as a surprise to him.

A number of St. Charles Patch readers and followers wrote to ask about the apparent closing of the popular Mexican restaurant. @danmajewski on Twitter told Patch he had dined at Fat Rosie's on Saturday night and had tried to return for lunch Monday, only to find an empty building.

Fat Rosie's opened its doors in December 2010. The restaurant combined an inventive take on Mexican fare with a mix of tequila-based libations.

said Fat Rosie's was brought to St. Charles because he believed the city "needed a little bit more of new food concepts."

The 5,000 sq. ft. space is available, Corcoran said. On Tuesday, he had already been approached by three parties interested in the spot.

"Things are still in place to put a restaurant back in," Corcoran said.

Fat Rosie's follows a two other high-profile restaurant closings.

, which closed temporarily when the adjoining building nearly collapsed in August 2011, completely shuttered last month. Long-time historic fixture also closed in early February with little explanation. 

Despite the recent setbacks, the restaurant scene in St. Charles is experiencing growth.

The Kane County Chronicle reports that several restaurants either have already opened or soon will in St. Charles—including a on East Main Street near Pheasant Run and , a tavern set to go in downtown on North Third Street.
