Overview: Front Street Cantina began with a love for salsa and the culture of Mexico and the southwest. The restaurant idea started as two friends paying homage to their favorite condiment, and has grown into five locations serving Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine throughout the western suburbs.
Decor: Exposed ceilings and rustic wood paneling give the restaurant a fun and airy feel. The bar area blends a modern look by using exposed brick and rich, wood accents. Corrugated metal around the bar brings back the true “cantina” style that flows through the rest of the restaurant.
The Drinks: Margaritas are the house special; there are many varieties available. Using ingredients like Prickly Pear and melon liqueur, Front Street serves up some delicious variations on the classic margarita. They also have specialty mixed drink menu that blends tropical flavors and fruits for a tasty escape.
Appetizers: The Mexican Pizza ($8.25) comes with your choice of meat, including chorizo sausage and ham. Topped with onions and black olives, this is a unique take on the traditional pizza. Ceviche ($7.25) is served on a flat crunchy corn tortilla, called a tostada. It is made with marinated Newfoundland turbot (halibut), tomatoes, onions and fresh cilantro.
Entrees: Front Street’s Carne Asada Suiza ($14.95), features steak that has been marinated and grilled, then topped with a tangy red ranchero sauce and cheddar cheese. The Chicken with Mole Sauce Enchiladas ($9.95) comes with two tortillas, stuffed with chicken and cheese. The mole tastes homemade, and the dish is a good value for the price overall. Steak or Chicken Fajitas ($12.95) are always a favorite with diners, note that sour cream and guacamole are served upon request only. If you’re having trouble deciding what to order, try a combination plate to experience a few different dishes.
Service: More often than not, they are extremely accommodating and pleasant. Busier nights might mean waiting an extra minute or two for the check, but slower weeknights can be a more intimate time.
