When and how did your business get started?

Two single men were sitting in a bar. One said to the other, "There must be a better way to meet single women than in a bar." The other man agreed. The next week they met with a representative of the St. Charles Park District. A notice was posted that a meeting of singles interested in forming a club was to be held. That was in 1976 and in January 1977, The St. Charles Singles Club, Ltd. became an Illinois non-profit corporation.

What is your business best known for?

The St. Charles Singles Club is now in its 37th year of providing inexpensive social activities for singles from more than 60 towns. Most popular are the dances held on second, fourth Mondays from 7:30 to 11:00 p.m. at Villa Olivia, 1401 West Lake Street, Bartlett. Admission is $6, members and $10, visitors for DJ dances. The dances have professionally instructed dance lessons from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is only $3 with dance admission.

What's something interesting about your business your customers might not know?

Costs of activities are kept low because all organizational tasks are carried out by members who are volunteers. In addition to the very popular dances, there are dinners, game nights (board, bridge, pinochle and more), weekly breakfasts, picnics, bowling, pool and much more.

Why did you choose the town you did to open your business?

St. Charles was the home town of the founders of the club. There were no clubs or organizations that provided social activities and events specifically for singles in St. Charles or in any local towns.
