St. Charles Blockbuster Avoids Ax as Company Cuts 500 Stores

Parent company Dish Network made the announcement Thursday, according to media reports.

St. Charles' remaining Blockbuster location will remain open as the video store chain pushes forward with plans to close 500 locations.

Store manager Adam Stang tells the St. Charles Patch the stores expected to close were already slated to do so because of underperformance.

"This store does very well," Stang said Friday.

The Denver Post is reporting Blockbuster's parent company, Dish Network Inc., announced Thursday its plans to shutter locatins across the United States within the next six months. This would leave about 1,000 locations open.

Dish Network bought the struggling company out of bankruptcy in April.

The satellite company first announced plans to close Blockbuster locations in January, according to The Huffington Post. The CEO also said they would be offering Dish Network services at the outlets that remain open.

Stang said corporate management had assured them they are not part of this latest round of cuts.

The West Lincoln Highway location currently does not sell Dish Network services but that the company is working toward that for some locations, Stang said.

A Blockbuster location on East Main Street closed in the summer of 2010.
