A Classic Car Show and More: 5 Things You Should Know for Tuesday, July 12

Today in St. Charles, you can learn how to fix a bicycle for free and attend a few family-friendly events.

The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce wants you to bring the family to downtown St. Charles tonight for a classic car show, complete with a live radio broadcast, food, and other activities. 

You can also attend a 4-H show at the Kane County Fairgrounds, play a game of chess or enter a contest with the St. Charles Park District. 

Here are our 5 favorite things you should know about today:

1. , sponsored by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, starts at 5 p.m. on 1st Street in downtown St. Charles. This is a free event for all ages, with face-painting, a 50/50 raffle, food and beverages. Music will be provided by a live broadcast from local oldies station Y103.9

Car registration starts at 5 p.m. and awards will be presented at 7:45 p.m.

2. You can win a prize at  during the "Will it Float?" contest, sponsored by the St. Charles Park District. Today through Thursday, park staff will place a special object at the park's entrance for contestants to guess whether it will float or sink.

On Friday, park staff will test the object's buoyancy and all correct answers will be entered into a drawing. 

3. The 4-H Small Pets and Cat Show will be in the Rabbit Building at the  in St. Charles. 4-H members have spent a year learning about animal care for smaller pets and cats. They will be judged on various care categories, including cage decoration. 

Final animal projects will be submitted for judging from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Small pet judging starts at 5 p.m., cats at 6 p.m. This free event is open to the public. 

4. Join the for Chess Knight at 7 p.m. Open to  ages 8 through adult, the event enables participants to play against those of varying skill levels. Families are welcome to play together. 

Participants should have a basic knowledge of the game and may bring their own chess boards. This is a free event; advance registration is not required. 

5.  will host a free bicycle repair class from 7 to 8 p.m. titled "Bicycle Repair For Dummies: How to Adjust the Front and Rear Derailleur." Mill Race employee and bike expert Kevin Pietka will demonstrate adjustment and cable replacement of the derailleur. Refreshments will be provided. 

No advance registration is required; all are welcome to attend.
