A Day for Fudge, Children's Books for Sale and More: 5 Things You Should Know for Friday, July 22

If you love sweets, look below for a recipe to make a special kind of candy for National Penuche Fudge Day.

The weekend festivities at the Kane County Fair start today. Read on to find out what's going on at the county's biggest event. 

An enlightening event will begin today at the Geneva History Center. Haunting photographs by a famous Geneva documentary photographer offer a perspective about Geneva that you likely never imagined.

1. Here are today's events at the Kane County Fair:

  • starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $12; ages 7 and younger are admitted free.
  • Super Saver Day offers unlimited carnival rides from noon to 5 p.m. for $15. 
  • The features the band Caozz at 6 p.m. Hi Infidelity plays at 8 p.m. 
  • The Chicago Toy Show starts at 2 p.m. in the Trades 1 building. 

2. Join the Geneva History Center for a titled Who Was Sadie Cooksie? by former Geneva resident Maggie Foskett. A documentary photographer, Foskett was trained by the famed Ansel Adams. 

Who was Sadie Cooksie? provides insight into the lives of young women housed in the Illinois State Training School for Delinquent Girls, which was located on the site of the now Fox Run subdivision in Geneva. This is a free exhibit and open to the public.

3. The will host a children's used book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Huntley Meeting Room. The sale is sponsored by the Junior Friends of the Library.

4. Baker Memorial United Methodist Church will have a at noon featuring vocalist Cynthia Spiegel. The concert will take place in conjunction with the St. Charles Farmers Market, also at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church. 

This is a free performance, but donations will be accepted. 

5. Today is national Penuche Fudge Day. Penuche Fudge is a brown brown-sugar-based fudge and is often referred to as Brown Sugar Fudge Candy.
