Dennis Hastert Speaks and More: 5 Things You Should Know for Wednesday, July 20

Find out what's going on during opening day of the Kane County Fair and Festival, attend a dog obedience training class for free and even meet Dennis Hastert.

If your dog needs a little obedience training but you're not sure where to go, there's a free event that will guide your pet down the right path. Also, the Kane County Fair and Festival starts today, so gear up for a weekend full of events and lots of great music. 

These are the five things you should know for today:

1. Here is a quick round-up of today's events at the Kane County Fair and Festival:

  • The starts at 5 p.m. This is a western-style horse show and competition that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat with excitement. The Speed Show is free with $5 admission to the fair. 
  • 4H judging starts at 8 a.m. with poultry. Dairy, horse and pony will follow at 8:30 a.m. Swine judging will start at noon. 
  • Local band Od Tapo Imi will take you on a tropical vacation with a high-energy sound of steel drums and Caribbean rhythm. The band takes the at 6 p.m. Free with $5 fair admission. 
  • Another Chicago area band Echoes of Floyd will perform on the Miller Lite Sound Stage at 8 p.m. Echoes is a Pink Floyd tribute band, with raw energy and extraordinary talent that appeals to fans of all ages. Free with $5 fair admission. 

2. The Kane County Young Republicans will host former Speaker  from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Urban Grille in Geneva. Hastert served 20 years as a Republican representative of Illinois 14th district and was the longest-serving Republican speaker in history.

This will take place on the lower level of Urban Grille in the private party area. All are welcome to attend.

3. Youths ages 11 to 19 interested in participating in a  should register by today. 

There is a $5 fee to participate. Prizes and recognition will be awarded to the top three players. 

4. The Geneva Public Library will host a free class on at 7 p.m. Kristy Dilworth from Smart Dogs Training will teach how to build a solid foundation for obedience and communication with your canine. 

This is a free class and is open to all. 

5. Catch some at the Riverwalk in Batavia. Billy Croft & The 5 Alarm will perform covers of country favorites from the past and present. Hear songs by The Eagles, Kenny Chesney, Elvis Presley and more. 

This is a free event and families are welcome.
