Election: Gaugel Concedes to Martin in Race for 4th Ward Alderman in St. Charles

Five absentee ballots yet to be tallied would not impact the outcome of Martin's 11-vote lead.

Steven Gaugel, who ran for election as 4th Ward Alderman for the St. Charles City Council conceded the race to incumbent Alderman Jim Martin and will not challenge the outcome.

Results from Tuesday’s municipal election indicated Martin won the seat by 11 votes. According to Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham, only five absentee ballots have not yet been counted in this race, which would not be enough votes to change the results.

Gaugel personally conceded to Martin and offered his assistance with issues facing the 4th Ward.

“(Gaugel) ran a very aggressive and clean campaign, and I conveyed my appreciation to him,” Martin said.

Official results have yet to be determined in two other races from Tuesday’s election. In the race for 5th Ward Alderman, Maureen Lewis leads Kim Malay by two votes and in the 2nd  Ward race, Rita Payleitner leads Art Lemke by eight votes.
