Heat Advisory to Continue Through Wednesday; County Health Department Posts List of Cooling Centers

Temperatures and the heat index could reach 100 degrees during this heat wave.

Prepare yourselves for another hot one.

A heat advisory will remain in the St. Charles area until Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. An excessive heat watch also will be in effect from Wednesday through late Thursday night.

As temperatures and heat index are forecast to climb past 100 degrees Tuesday, Kane County health and emergency management officials are advising residents about available cooling centers and how to stay safe.

The Kane County Health Department and Office of Emergency Management have asked residents to be careful during the heat, where people could see temperatures in the 90s that, when combined with high humidity, could feel like 105 to 110 degrees.

In St. Charles, the , 2 E. Main St., serves as an available cooling spot should the need arise.

Unfortunately, the night isn’t expected to provide much respite. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are forecast to stay in the middle or upper 70s through the overnight hours.

Recommendations from the Kane County Health Department:

  • Find air-conditioning if you don't have any available. Libraries, shopping malls and other public buildings work.
  • Avoid hot foods and heavy meals.
  • Drink water and replenish salt. Don't use salt tablet unless advised by a medical professional.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible during the middle of the day.
  • Check on neighbors who might be susceptible to the extreme conditions.  
  • Don't forget to give your pets water, too.
