Top 5 Fall Fashion Trends for 2012

Top 5 Fall Fashion Trends for 2012, chosen by local Fashion Stylist and Wardrobe Consultant Mallory Sills.

Since September has officially begun it's time to start thinking about your fall wardrobe.  As a fashion stylist and wardrobe consultant it's part of my job to focus on fashion trends for each season (although it's something I would be doing regardless!), I'm always thinking about ways to translate the trends that are seen on the runways to real life.  What we see on the runway during New York's fashion week is similar to a Broadway Musical, it's for entertainment.  However it can be difficult invisioning how to wear those trends without looking like you should be in a musical.  That's where I come in, I figure out ways to embrace certain trends, help decide which trends are best for your age, lifestyle, and body shape.  Of course, there are a variety of trends for this Fall season but I thought I would share a few of my favorites and most wearable.

1) Combining Black & Blue
This has been a color combination I've loved for some time now, and I'm so glad to see it's being even more celebrated!  Mixing blue and black is a great way to add an instant update, instead of wearing black on black or blue on blue the combination adds a level of interest.

2) Reptile Prints
This is a slight change from the ever popular leopard print that comes back season after season.  Similar to the leopard print, reptile prints are fantastic because they're often times found in neutral tones making them easy to mix and match with items you already have in your wardrobe.  If you're not quite ready to wear a dress made completely of this print try adding it into your wardrobe with a handbag, or shoes.  Accessories are a great way to incorporate trends in small doses.

3) Leather
This trend is going to be nearly impossible to miss this season, I've already noticed it in nearly every store since they've been putting out Fall merchandise.  I absolutely love leather because of it's versatility.  Leather is definitely something that you can wear for years to come, so find a leather piece in a silhouette that you love and flatters your shape because you're sure to be able to wear it for a long time.  I've found that even stores like H&M have great items in 'pleather' that don't LOOK like fake leather, and are at great price points.  Wear a leather jacket with a feminine blouse, that way it still keeps your look feminine with an edge with the leather.

4) Military
Don't be intimidated by this trend.  You can embrace this military inspired trend with the button detailing that's found in many uniforms, structured jackets, and even gloves and high collars on jackets.  The military trend is best embraced with outerwear, find a jacket with strong structure in a great color and there you go!

5) Black & White
I know, I know, black & white doesn't seem like a new idea to the fashion industry but this season it's all about making this color combination in a statment making way.  Wearing a crisp white blazer with black trouser pants and a black and white patterned blouse can be a great way to do this.  The best part of this trend is you don't have to worry about weather or not the colors 'go.'  And don't worry about that old rule of "No white after Labor Day" that rule is LONG gone.  In fact, I urge you to wear white all Winter long...all white is another trend for the fall and winter seasons.
