TOP CAUSES OF DEATH IN MEN ARE PREVENTABLE

The Mayo Clinic and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cite heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease as the top causes of death among adult men in the United States. Life expectancy of men in the U.S. is slightly less than 76 years.

During National Men’s Health Month, Julie West PT, owner of West Physical Therapy in Sugar Grove, and a member of the Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (PPS) is outlining prevention strategies to reduce health risks to men.

“The good news about the four leading causes in male mortality – heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease – is that they are largely preventable,” said West. “Most identify physical therapists as those who help recover from an injury. However, we work with patients every day to effect behavior change to prevent injury recurrence as well as adopting healthier means of living that reduce illness, injury and disease.”

The goal of West Physical Therapy during Men’s Health Month is to draw attention to preventable health problems and outline tailored plans to keep men healthy and strong.

“A healthy plan treats the entire body, and ranges from starting a regular exercise routine to reduce heart disease, respiratory disease – building strength in bones, joints and muscles – to proper nutrition that helps keep the body well fueled,” West concluded.

West says West Physical Therapy opens its doors to anyone interested in learning how to adopt a sustained healthy lifestyle. For more information, please visit www.westphysicaltherapy.com
