The 30th Annual Country Folk Art Festival offers… An Auctioneer’s Choices

St. Charles auctioneer Kyle Reed shares his ``finds'' with shoppers at The Country Folk Art Festival

St. Charles, IL (Sept. 20 2012) Does finding just the right spinning wheel have you running in circles? All mixed up over where to find a butter churn? Or a wicker carriage for your favorite moppet’s dolly?

The Reed’s General Merchandise booth at The 30th Annual Country Folk Art Festival is THE place to shop. It’s chock full of folky pieces as well as antique and vintage delights plucked right from the floor of the historic circa 1874 building by the same name. Slated for demolition in 1995, the Reed family salvaged and painstakingly restored the structure after moving it down the street to a rural St. Charles lot they owned.

Now when collectors are looking for just the right weathered school desk, a wooden theater seat or a group of small, nostalgic collectibles or other yesteryear treasure, they’ve learned Reed’s General Merchandise is the place to go.

Auctioneer Kyle Reed of Reed’s General Merchandise has set up temporary shopkeeping Sept. 21, 22 and 23  at The Autumn Country Folk Art Festival.

Reed, 37, who comes from a family of collectors that includes parents who for years operated their own antiques shop, is a natural for the business.  Laid off from a job in safety and environmental management in 2009, Reed enrolled in Nashville Auction School in Tullahoma, TN, returned home on completion of his studies, launched a family run business and hired the best qualified manager he could find – himself. Auctioneering was a logical choice for a young man with a long history of accompanying his grandfather and parents to auctions.

``I enjoy going to auctions whether it is to buy a specific piece or just find some `box lots’ in search of hidden treasure,’’ says Reed who is growing his business not only through auctions but also internet and estates sales and a recently opened sister company, RGM Real Estate Co. ``This provides the versatility to accommodate any sellers needs – whether it be their whole house and its contents or just one piece of personal property,’’ says Reed.
