Expect Traffic Snarls Sunday During Bicycle Race and Block Party

St. Charles police to close several downtown streets on Sunday.

Planning on heading into downtown St. Charles this weekend? Then expect some traffic snarls due to the bicycle race, police say.

On Sunday a Criterium Bike Race will be held in the downtown St. Charles area on Sunday July 29, 2012.  A number of City streets will be affected by the race and a block party that will be taking place at the same time.

The following streets will be closed from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.:

  • The Illinois Street Bridge will be closed. Illinois Street will be closed between S. 2nd Street (IL. Rt. 31) and Riverside Avenue
  • The Prairie Street Bridge will be closed.  Prairie Street will be closed between S. 2nd Street (IL. Rt. 31) and Riverside Avenue
  • S. 1st Street will be closed between Illinois St. and Prairie Street
  • S. Riverside Avenue will be closed between Illinois Avenue and S. 5th Avenue (IL. Rt. 25).

All on street parking will be prohibited on S. 1st Street between Illinois Street and Prairie Street. Vehicles left parked on that street will be towed.

The one-day bicycle race will start and finish in front of and offer some challenges, including and incline the final turn, which launches into a long straightaway crossing the scenic Fox River for the second time, followed by a minor descent to end the course. Heats begin at 10 a.m.

The Sammy’s St. Charles Prairie State Criterium will be the kick-off race to the Prairie State Cycling Series, which will expand to multiple Illinois communities in 2013. It is part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland racing series.

While the racing takes place, cycling fans and others in downtown St. Charles can participate in a free block party hosted by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership and the City of St. Charles.

The Fox Island Square Block Party will feature cookouts by and the , promotions and sidewalk sale by , as well as participation by , , and The .
