Fire Hits St. Charles Garage on South 6th Street

Neighbor and newspaper deliverer saw flames and called 911.

Authorities are investigating the cause of an early morning garage fire that caused an estimated $35,000 but caused no injuries.

The fire at 202 S. 6th St. was reported simultaneously at 5:16 a.m. Friday by a neighbor and a newspaper deliverer, said interim St. Charles Fire Chief Joseph Schelstreet. Firefighters were on the scene four minutes later to find a two-car garage well-involved in fire, which also affected two vehicles in the driveway.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes, Schelstreet, although they stayed on the scene until after 7 a.m. as they performed overhaul and conducted the fire investigation.
