The vehicle went about 60 feet off the road, according to officials. Here's what happened.

One man was airlifted to a hospital after a one-car crash Sunday afternoon on Route 25 south of Batavia, fire officials said.

The crash occurred at the Red Oak Nature Center entrance on the 2300 block of South River Road (Route 25). Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at about 2:50 p.m., said North Aurora Fire Capt. Mike Klemencic.

The man was taken by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His condition and identity were not immediately available.

A midsize or crossover sport utility-type vehicle was northbound on Route 25 when it struck a pole on the passenger side, Klemencic said.

"The car went through the utility pole sideways and completely took it out," Klemencic said. The vehicle "went about 60 feet. It ended up in the parking lot in the Red Oak Nature Center. Right now the accident's under investigation with the police."

The man that was transported was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver did not require transport, according to the fire department.

The crash shut down Route 25 south of Batavia for several hours between Ridge and Banbury roads. Crash investigators were at the scene during the closure. It was raining during the crash, Klemencic said.

"Please avoid the area of Route 25, north of Butterfield (Route 56) ... due to a serious traffic accident," an advisory message from North Aurora police said. The message was released at 4:09 p.m. Sunday.

Injuries were reported and a medical helicopter was requested to the scene, according to scanner reports at about 2:55 p.m. The car had to be towed after the crash.

Further information on the crash was not immediately available. Patch will post an update if any other details are released.

This was the second crash reported on Sunday that involved a vehicle striking a utility pole. The first crash occurred on the 1400 block of Main Street in Batavia at 11:27 a.m.
