St. Charles Police Department Offering Citizen Police Academy

The free academy provides participants with a better understanding how the St. Charles Police Department operates.

The is hosting its annual Citizen Police Academy (CPA) March 6 through April 26.

The free academy provides participants with a better understanding how the St. Charles Police Department operates. Some topics covered in CPA are criminal and narcotics investigations, arrest and courts procedures, traffic stops, the K-9 unit, the Tactical Response Team, crime scene processing, domestic violence, the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS).

The curriculum features both classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations for participants in areas including processing fingerprints, obtaining radar readings and shooting on the FATS machine.

The academy also enables participants to assist the department as a sounding board regarding how the police department meets community needs.

The class is scheduled to meet 7 to 9 p.m.  Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 6 through April 26. Most classes will meet in the St. Charles Police Department training room at 211 N. Riverside Ave. in St. Charles. A graduation session is usually scheduled for the Tuesday following the last class meeting.

Applications are available in the front lobby of the police department, by calling 630-377-4435 or via the city website at www.stcharlesil.gov/pd/programs.

Completed applications can be dropped off or mailed to the St. Charles Police Department in care of Officer Bill Tynan at 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles, IL 60174.

All applications are subject to approval and the academy is open to St. Charles residents, property and business owners and their employees, as well as approved St. Charles high school juniors and seniors.
