St. Charles Police Offer Halloween Safety Tips

Police offer advice for keeping their kids safe and ask motorists to exercise caution on Halloween.

It's that time of year again, when little goblins and scary ghosts will be going door to door, asking for treats! The St. Charles Police Department recommends the following safety tips to help make the occasion safe and enjoyable:

  • Limit your child's "Trick or Treating" to between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m.
  • Young children should be accompanied by their parents or another responsible adult
  • If there is a chance they will be out after dark, one member of each group should carry a flashlight
  • Stress to your children that they watch for traffic
  • Have them walk on the sidewalk and cross the street at intersections
  • Check that your children's costumes fit properly and they can see well
  • Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it
  • Children should be dressed in light-colored costumes that also are short enough to prevent tripping
  • If they do wear dark-colored clothing, add reflective tape or reflectors

Police ask that motorist be especially observant and watch for children who are not being alert for cars. All residents are encouraged to use outside lighting for the safety of the trick-or-treaters. Parents are reminded to close and lock their car and garage doors to reduce the opportunity of theft and vandalism.

The St. Charles Police Department would like to thank you in advance for helping us to make this a safe and fun-filled day!
