Elgin Man Charged in St. Charles SubWay Robbery

Authorities believe the Elgin man charged is responsible for four other robberies from North Aurora to Cary.

An Elgin man has been charged in a series of armed robberies stretching from North Aurora to St. Charles to South Elgin to Carpentersville to Cary and which included the robbery of a St. Charles sandwich shop early this month.  


In a release issued Wednesday, the St. Charles Police Department announced the arrest of Rodney W. Boyette, 50, of Elgin, who is charged in a Nov. 26 warrant in the St. Charles robbery with one count of aggravated robbery/indicate armed with a firearm, a Class 1 felony, and one count of robbery, a Class 2 felony. He also is charged in a Nov. 7 robbery in Carpentersville and may face more charges.


About 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, a man came in and robbed the Subway, 570 S. Randall Road. Police said at the time that that the the robber approached the employee and demanded money, saying he had a gun. No gun was displayed during the incident. The employee told police that the robber’s hands were unconcealed during the incident, and that he never threatened the safety of the employee. The robber was given an undisclosed sum of money and fled.

According to Wednesday’s St. Charles Police Department release, the witnesses’s description of the robber appeared similar to that provided in similar robberies that occurring:


  • Oct. 31 in North Aurora.

  • Nov. 1 in South Elgin.

  • Nov. 5 in Cary.


  • The release states that the witness statements, along with video surveillance, pointed to one person having committed all four robberies.


    Authorities got their break in the case on Nov. 7, during a robbery at a Carpentersville business, in which the robber implied he had a weapon, demanded cash and then fled, the release states. But a witness gave police information about a vehicle that might have been involved, and shortly afterward an Algonquin police officer found a vehicle matching that description, and Boyette was taken into custody.


    Boyette was charged in the Carpentersville incident and transferred to the Kane County Jail, where he remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.
