A Texas grant jury has indicted a former St. Charles man in connection with the death of his infant son, whose body was found buried in the New Mexico desert just days after the and his family disappeared from their home in El Paso, according to media reports.

KFOX14 TV in El Paso, Texas, reported Dec. 12, 2013, that Jeffrey Farrey, 22, was indicted the day before on a charge of injury to a child by omission. His bail remains set at $1.5 million.

According to KFOX14, the indictment charges that Farrey failed to provide his 5-month-old son Jackson Farrey with medical care, control and protection, which he had a legal duty to provide, while he had custody of the child on Oct. 27.

It is unclear if that is believed to be the date on which Jackson Farrey died. Prosecutors have said they believe the infant died nearly a month before his body was found on Nov. 20 buried in a desert area near Orogrande, N.M.

Autopsy results have not been released yet.

Jeffrey Farrey and wife Jenna, 20, also formerly of St. Charles, and their two sons were reported missing Nov. 15, 2013, from their home in El Paso, Texas. Two days later, the couple and their now 20-month-old son Blake were discovered in an Escanaba, Mich., hotel. Both adults were arrested and son Blake was taken in into the custody of the state’s Department of Child Protective Services.

Afterward, Jeffrey Farrey, an Army specialist stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, was extradited back to El Paso on an absent without leave warrant and charged in connection with Jackson’s death. Jenna Farrey was returned to El Paso the following week after waiving extradition on a fugitive warrant for probation violation related to a child abandonment conviction related to their older son, has yet to be charged in Jackson’s death.

The Escanaba, Mich., Daily Press reported last week that Jeffrey Farrey has spent most of the past year away from home. According to the paper, he was either serving in Afghanistan or was away from home for military training.
