Chocolate Milkshake Day and More: 5 Things for Sept. 12

See what's in store for Monday.

Here are five things going on today:

1. The Tri-City Unemployment Group will host a seminar titled from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at . Tonight's speaker will be Keith Owens.

Owens is with Principle Communications, a consulting firm specializing in media relations, financial/investor relations and marketing communications. He also is a senior consultant with CommCore Consulting Group, a leading national counseling organization working in message development, spokesperson training and presentation skills.

2. A Planning and Development Committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the city . A copy of the meeting agenda can be found at http://www.stcharlesil.gov/NEW/meetings/agendas/a09-12-11-pd.pdf.

The City of St. Charles will also conduct a Youth Commission Meeting at 6 p.m. in the Police Department Conference Room, 211 N. Riverside Ave. Tonight's topics will include a distracted drivers campaign at Scarecrow Fest and liaison reports from various local organizations. 3. The school board will meet at 7 p.m. at Anderson Elementary School. The board will discuss Teacherscape Reflect contracts, among other items.  

Teachscape Reflect allows for a 360-degree video view of classroom instruction, providing software for sharing and commenting on lessons. It improves teacher collaboration, expands professional learning capacity, and ensures rigorous professional development and coaching.  and schools will be participating in the pilot program. 4. The Literacy Volunteers of Fox Valley will train volunteer tutors from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the . Other training sessions will take place on Sept. 14, 19 and 21. After training has been completed, volunteers will be matched with an adult student and meet for tutoring one hour each week.

Volunteers from all backgrounds are encouraged to train and those who do so are not required to know a second language to participate. Registration is required; for more information, visit www.lvfv.org.

5. Fun Fact: Today is National Chocolate Milkshake Day. Most chocolate milkshakes come out of a machine, but there was a time when milkshakes were hand-dipped and made from scratch. You can still indulge yourself in hand-dipped milkshakes in St. Charles at , and Oberweis Dairy, among other locations in and around St. Charles.
