City Council Approves Ward Boundaries

New maps subject to legal review.

The St. Charles City Council unanimously approved new ward boundaries Monday night, according to a Kane County Chronicle report.

The ward boundaries were redrawn to coincide with population shifts from the 2010 U.S. Census. The census showed population growth in the west and northwest portions of St. Charles. Ward populations under the new map have populations within .74 percent of each other.

According to the Chronicle report aldermen from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th wards initially worked on the new boundaries. However, after the city council rejected a map in February, aldermen from the 1st and 5th wards joined the map making process. The task force was followed certain legal requirements, including balancing population (i.e. deviation of no more than 1 percent). The group also considered typical neighborhood boundaries as well as commonly recognized geographic barriers in the community (e.g., Main Street and the Fox River).
