Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Red Gate Bridge Aug. 25

The City of St. Charles will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Red Gate Bridge on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place on Route 31 at Red Gate Road.

The new bridge will extend Red Gate Road across the Fox River to Route 25 and help knit the east and west sides of northern St. Charles, while reducing traffic on Main Street. In addition to a car deck to accommodate vehicular traffic, the bridge will feature a pedestrian walkway that will connect to existing trails on either side of the river. “We are glad to get construction underway,” said Mayor Donald DeWitte. “The bridge will alleviate traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for residents of St. Charles.”

The total budget for the bridge project is $30 million. Funding comes from grants, monies that already have been set aside for the project, and a bond issuance. No new taxes are needed to fund this project. “Now is the time to proceed with this project. The current economy is optimal for moving ahead and constructing the bridge,” said Mark Koenen, Director of Public Works.
