Former VFW Building Demolition Under Way in St. Charles

Demolition crews were hard at it on Tuesday, July 23, continuing demolition of the former VFW Post 5036 at 119 N. 3rd St. to make way for a temporary parking lot city officials hope to replace with a parking deck in the coming decades.

The city purchased the building and property for $800,000 — the sale was completed in June, and intends to spend about $250,000 to demolish the structure and turn the site into a parking lot serving the downtown.

Public Works Director Mark Koenen told the St. Charles City Council Government Services Committee on Monday night that demolition should be completed by this Friday, and that construction of the parking lot should be completed in plenty of time for St. Charles annual Scarecrow Festival, which runs Oct. 11-13 in the city’s downtown area.
