Fox River Trail in Elgin Closes for One Month

Submitted by the Forest Protection District of Kane County

Work on the Illinois Tollway’s I-90/Fox River Bridge construction project will prompt the closure of the Fox River Trail in Elgin for one month, beginning Monday, July 21.

Contractors for the project will be installing stormwater drainage improvements.  The project aims to capture all stormwater on the Fox River Bridge and direct it through a treatment process prior to discharge into the Fox River.

Additionally, the Tollway will eliminate the existing storm sewer that currently drains groundwater in the area, and prevent the direct flow of stormwater runoff into the adjacent forested fen communities.

The Fox River Trail will be closed at the Covey Road intersection to the north, and at the Trout Park Boulevard intersection to the south.  There will be signs and barricades at each location.  The Forest Preserve District of Kane County asks trail users to use caution and be mindful of construction traffic on or around the project area.

The Fox River Bridge Project includes the removal and reconstruction of the 660-foot-long bicycle and pedestrian bridge, located underneath the I-90 Fox River Bridge, providing public access over the Fox River in Elgin.

When complete in 2016, the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge will be similar in length and appearance to the existing structure, however, it will be widened from the current 9-foot width to about 12 feet wide, to improve access and assist with Tollway maintenance and inspection of the bridge.
