Hotel Baker Fined $250 for Liquor Code Violation

The Hotel Baker has been fined $250 by the city after the hotel was found in violation of the liquor code for a Sept. 5 incident in which a patron left the premises with an open alcoholic beverage.

The finding of a violation on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, by Mayor Raymond Rogina as the city’s liquor commission, came upon the recommendation of the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission, which met that same day.


The violation is The Hotel Baker’s first since 2007, according to a release announcing the fine. The hotel also was ordered to pay the city’s costs associated with the violation, which typically have totaled about $500. The release was posted Friday on the city’s website.


The Hotel Baker was cited on Sept. 9 for the incident, which occurred four days earlier when a patron left the historic hotel while in possession of an alcoholic beverage.

Andrew J. Schaus, 32, of the 500 block of Charing Cross Road, Elk Grove, was cited at 12:09 a.m. at West Main and 1st streets with open alcohol. Police said they saw Schaus leave the Hotel Baker, 100 W. Main St., with an open bottle containing an alcoholic beverage.


In the release, Rogina recognized the hotel’s efforts in handling the infraction.

“We acknowledge management’s willingness to review and revise current procedures to ensure the ordinance is followed,” he said in the release.


On Monday, hotel owner Joe Salas and his attorney Joe Klein told laid out mitigating factors related to the violation, clearly acknowledging mistakes were made. They said they would use this incident in further staff training to avoid such an incident occurring again.
