IRS Offers 'Tax-Exempt' Workshops in Chicago and DeKalb

One-day workshop aims to help nonprofits know their tax obligations and understand how to maintain their tax-exempt status.

The Internal Revenue Service is offering low-cost, one-day workshops in Chicago and DeKalb to educate tax-exempt organizations about meeting their tax obligations and maintaining their tax-exempt status.

The Tax Compliance Workshop for Small and Medium-Sized Tax-Exempt Organizations has two sessions scheduled in September. According to an IRS release, each session is led by experienced IRS employees who are specialists on exempt organizations. The workshops are designed for executives, board members, administrators, staff or volunteers who are responsible for a small or medium-sized organization's tax compliance. The release states the workshops are approved for continuing professional education credits for tax professionals.

According to the IRS, the topics include discussion of benefits and responsibilities of tax-exempt status, unrelated business income (including charitable gaming), employment issues (classification and filing requirements), overview of the redesigned 990 form series, resources and tools and required disclosures. This workshop will not cover how to apply for tax-exempt status or compliance requirements for non-501(c)(3) organizations.
