Main Street Work in St. Charles Resuming in Earnest

Lane closures have begun, traffic has been rerouted for final season of project.

Construction crews are breaking up and removing sections of old roadway as the final season of the East Main Street/Route 64 Reconstruction prepares to go full-bore toward completion late this summer.

St. Charles Public Works Engineering Division Manager James Bernahl, in his Route 64 construction update email this week, outlined what’s going on and what to expect as your traveling in the construction zone:

38th Avenue to Route 59

Crews will continue putting in new concrete pavement on the west side of Smith and Kautz roads near East Main Street. Once the concrete has cured — in about 10 days after it is installed — traffic will be shifted to the new roadway as work begins on the east side.

The contractor will continue breaking up and removing some remaining roadway sections over the next few weeks in preparation for installing the new concrete roadway on East Main Street.

Construction crews expect to install a new storm sewer across Powis Road beginning Friday April 5, which is expected to be complete within a week, weather permitting. Bernahl said the Illinois Department of Transportation wants to reopen the full Powis Road intersection as quickly as possible, but no date has been set for that yet.

Work connected to the new bridge near Powis Road should continue through the next few months, with completion expected by mid-July 2013. Crews are working on the bridge’s center lanes while traffic uses the outside lanes.

7th Avenue to Kirk Road

Construction activities on this stretch began March 25, 2013, with the reinstallation of an electronic message boards indicating that work began. As announced then, traffic has been diverted to two lanes beginning near 7th Avenue and East Main.

Construction crews will continue to break and remove the old roadway on the north side of East Main Street beginning near that intersection and will move eastward. Bernahl’s email states the work will include improving and expanding storm sewers within the Illinois Department of Transportation right of way.

Curb installation work on East Main Street between Tyler Road and Kirk Road will continue, including permanent concrete patching for the proposed roadway widening.

Crews will continue pavement grinding and removal mainly on the north side of East Main Street from 7th Avenue toward Kirk Road. This work is expected to continue for the next few weeks.
