St. Charles to Conduct Roadway Condition Analysis

Information gleaned from effort to be used to plan for future road projects.

The city of St. Charles is preparing to embark upon a thorough analysis of the condition of St. Charles’ 140 miles of city streets with plans of developing a short- and long-term plan for scheduling road reconstruction and resurfacing projects.

The work begins the week of Oct. 29, according to the city. IMS Infrastructure Management Services will drive the entire St. Charles public streets system using a white van with cameras and flashing construction lights, and/or a smaller vehicle with a small trailer, according to a release from the city.

No road closures are required and the work does not generate loud or disturbing noise, the release states.

The vehicle or vehicles used will collect data about road conditions that will be evaluated for use in developing a pavement-management program, the city states in the release. The evaluation will include analysis of the existing pavement surface condition and deflection testing.

The fieldwork is investigative in nature and is nondestructive. The project is expected to take two weeks to complete.

“Evaluating the roadways helps us identify the proper maintenance technique to apply to each road,” said St. Charles Public Works Engineering Division Manager James Bernahl. “This ensures that the city develops an efficient, cost-effective road-maintenance program.”

Once the roadway testing is complete, the release states, IMS will compile and analyze the collected data, which the city will use to plan and schedule short- and long-term street resurfacing and reconstruction projects.
