Videos Offer Time-Lapse View of Red Gate Bridge Construction

The City of St. Charles has the time-lapse video posted on Vimeo. Each video is 3½ minutes long.

If you’ve ever wondered what the construction of Red Gate Bridge would look like condensed into just several minutes, the city of St. Charles can show you.

City Administrator Brian Townsend wrote about the two Red Gate Bridge videos the city produced and posted on Vimeo in his blog on July 17, 2013. St. Charles Patch liked them so much that we wanted to share them again with our readers.

Each video is 3½ minutes long: One is a view from Route 31 on the west, the second is a view from Route 25 from the east. The cameras, which were mounted in fixed locations during construction, actually focus more on the bridge approaches from the two state highways.

During construction, the city maintained two cameras that streamed live video of the activity taking place at the site, with the live stream going directly to the city’s Red Gate Bridge Web page. According to Townsend’s blog, the cameras also captured still images, which were compiled into the videos, documenting the construction from start to finish.

You can see the bridge going up best in the view from the east.

The $30 million bridge spans the Fox River, connecting Red Gate Road at Route 31 on the West Side to Route 25. Ground was broken for the bridge in August 2011. The bridge opened to vehicular traffic in mid-December 2012, with work completed in May 2013.

In his blog, Townsend credited the Public Works and Information Systems departments for establishing and maintaining the cameras through the 2-month-long construction period. He also credited Carolyn Shannon in the city’s Information Systems Department for compiling the images and producing the videos.
