College Notes: St. Charles College Students Post Achievements

Men and women from St. Charles earn spot on teams, perform, make presentations.

Courtney Smith, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Softball

Courtney Smith, a freshman psychology major from St. Charles, made the 2012-13 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team.

The university’s softball team has won eight WIAC regular-season titles, most recently in 2009. When the players are not on the field, they are giving back to the community. The team organized a fundraiser to benefit a former university softball player whose daughter was born with a heart defect and eventually received a heart transplant.

Molly Clementz , Luther College Recital

Molly Clementz of St. Charles, a senior at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, is scheduled to perform a mezzo-soprano recital at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.

The daughter of Lynda and Michael Clementz of St. Charles, Clementz is a 2009 graduate of St. Charles North High School who is majoring in music at Luther.

Clementz will perform works by Bach, Ernest Chausson, Aaron Copland, Gustav Mahler and Gioachino Rossini. Clementz will be accompanied by Luther seniors Karla Dietmeyer, violin, and Stephen Uhl, piano. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther is home to one of the nation’s largest collegiate music programs, with six choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and nearly 1,000 student musicians. More than 350 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music and performance.

Marissa Mueller, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Research Day

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater had 120 students who conducted research projects over the past year showcase their work during the university’s Undergraduate Research Day on March 13.

Marissa Mueller, of St. Charles, a sophomore special education major, presented "The Effects of a Two-Tiered Peer-Sensitivity Training on the Social Interactions between One Elementary Age Child with Autism and His Peers."

"The breadth and depth of research being done here is very exciting," said Catherine Chan, associate professor of biological sciences and director of the program. "Students take ownership of these projects and are mentored by dedicated faculty members who are passionate about their field."

"Many of the students received thousands of dollars in grants to conduct their research," said Samantha Samreth, director of the McNair Scholars Program. "The money helps pay for project expenses including books, consumables, equipment and travel to conferences."

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater sends dozens of students to the event each year. Seventy-seven University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students, representing 2.3 percent of all invitees nationwide, will be at this year's event in La Crosse, Wis., from April 11 to 13.

Alicia Abendroth, Augustana College Symphonic Band

Augustana College’s Symphonic Band recently completed its 2013 Midwest tour, which included performances in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska. Alicia Abendroth, a senior from St. Charles, Ill., majoring in communication studies, was among the students who performed.

The band's program was a balance of new and standard pieces to both entertain and educate the audience.

Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences in Rock Island. Current students and alumni include 141 Academic All-Americans, a Nobel laureate, 12 college presidents and other distinguished leaders. The college enrolls 2,500 students and is located along one of the world's most important waterways, the Mississippi River, in a community that reflects the diversity of the United States.

Alex Damaska, Bryan College Chorale Tour

Alex Damaska of St. Charles performed with the Bryan College Chorale as the ensemble presented concerts during its spring tour throughout the Southeast in March.

Alex, son of Jon and TeresaDamaska, is one of 46 singers in the chorale, under the direction of Dr. David Luther. The group performs regularly during the school year throughout the Southeast. The chorale has been received enthusiastically throughout the United States and in five tours of Europe. They have performed in Lincoln Center in New York City, and in Westminster Abbey in London.

Their spring 2013 tour included performances in Knoxville, Tenn.; Chatsworth, Savannah and Statesboro, Ga.; Winter Park, Lady Lake and Tallahassee, Fla.; and Anniston Ala.

Located in Dayton, Tenn., Bryan is a Christian liberal arts college offering bachelor's degrees in 21 areas and master's degrees in business administration and Christian studies.
