North's Homecoming Kicks Off with Pep

The students focus on uniting with school spirit during St. Charles North High School's homecoming week.

Senior Katie Thomka's school spirit was written on her face Monday afternoon. Like many of her North High School classmates, she showed her senior class spirit by donning the chosen homecoming colors of red, white and black, as well as with face painting.

"Homecoming is about seniors going all out with school spirit. This is our last year and we want to make sure that all the other classes know we as seniors have the most school spirit," Thomka said.

North's homecoming festivities kicked off Monday afternoon with a pep assembly in the gymnasium on the St. Charles North campus.

A packed house of students from all class levels fueled the North Star pride for the assembly.

For current students, homecoming can symbolize the beginning of fall and a return to new school year. For alumni, it means a chance a return to the grounds they once traveled. Students can look forward to a week of school pride that leads up to the football game and homecoming dance.

The week ahead is a flurry of activity at the school, culminating in the homecoming parade, scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday on Main Street in downtown St. Charles, and the home football game against Streamwood later that night.

Monday's pep rally began a week of themed dress events, homecoming court voting, and a Goodwill donation day, just to name a few.

Emcees Dan Washington, Derrick Backer, and Leah Horton pumped up the student with a slap stick comedic introduction. Their antics brought together the students with jokes and the razzing of teachers and friends.

While everyone comes away with a different experience for homecoming pride, they all share the same objective; to boost school spirit and come together as a community.

Senior Kendall Karr said that homecoming is the time when "all the classes come together and unite."

Karr said she felt that while students may stick to their general groups of friends the rest of the year, homecoming is a time for the students to find a sense of loyalty and school spirit that makes a positive school community.
