The calliope is tuning up, turkey legs are in the rotisserie, elephant ears are ready for the fryer and county residents are ready for the annual Kane County Fair, which starts this afternoon.
The annual festive event, now in its 144th year, kicks off at 3 p.m. today and closes out July 22.
Hours of operation are:
- July 18 3p.m. - 11p.m.
- July 19 noon-11 p.m.
- July 20-21 noon-midnight
- July 22 noon-10 p.m.
Admission is $8 for the day, or a week’s pass can be purchased for $20. Admission for today though is only $5. Children under 5-years-old get in free. There are all day access passes available througout the week, including the $12 "Last Blast" deal on Sunday.
Grandstand shows are priced separately. Some of the grandstand acts include a demolition derby on Sunday, for $10; the Big Hat Rodeo on Saturday for $10 and bull riding on Friday for $12.
Tonight three musical acts, Giving Moon, Train Company and Kashmir will perform at the grandstand for free.
Musical acts performing this year include In the Flesh, Hi Infidelity and 7th Heaven.

And fair organizers haven’t forgotten the youngsters. Children can enjoy the petting zoo and duck and pig races.
