Thousands Brave Heat, Gather for Independence Day Celebration

Fourth of July festivities bring St. Charles residents together.

Although temperatures neared 100 degrees Wednesday afternoon, that did not deter thousands from gathering at Pottawatomie Park to celebrate America's 236th birthday.

Dozens waited in line for Swanson Pool to open and when it did, laughter and fun ensued as people fought the high temperatures. Many golfers also took advantage of a cloudless day to play the nine-hole course at Pottawatomie Park.

Parking lots were full by the middle of the afternoon and hundreds selected shaded spots to set out blankets and picnic items for fireworks and the musical acts that provided entertainment.

There was some doubt as to whether the fireworks would take place due to excessively dry conditions, but weekend storms brought enough rain provide a buffer against fires from the pyrotechnics.
