2 Events Will Close Roads in Geneva on Memorial Day Weekend

Delnor's Multi-Sports Madness on Sunday and the Memorial Day parade on Monday will close some streets near the Delnor Hospital campus and in downtown Geneva.

The Geneva Police Department is alerting area drivers to two weekend events that will have an impact on local traffic. The Delnor Multi-Sport Madness Triathlon will be run in the area of the Delnor campus, requiring the closure of some roads from about 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26. During that time, the city will close Williamsburg Avenue west of Randall Road, Fisher Drive from Heartland Drive to Bricher Road and Bricher Road from the western entrance of the Geneva Commons to Peck Road. Police officers and volunteers working the event will help residents in that area come and go to their residences as quickly as they are able. St. Charles Council Honors Student, Scout, Vets

Monday’s St. Charles City Council meeting included recognition of two young men and the city’s veterans.

Two young men were singled out for honors from the St. Charles City Council this week, as were the city’s veterans, who service to the nation is recognized on Memorial Day, which is Monday. First up on Monday was Dustin Baldwin, a St. Charles North High School graduating senior, who was awarded the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Council for Industry 2013 Industrial Arts Scholarship. Funded by the city, the $1,250 scholarship is intended to assist students at both St. Charles high schools and is to be used toward an associate of applied science degree or vocational specialist certification offered through the Career and Technical Education Program at Elgin Community College. Lightning Smashes Through Roof of Batavia Home, Starts Fire on Ekman Drive

WATCH firefighters battle a house house fire caused when lightning smashed through the roof of a home shortly after noon Wednesday, May 22.

Batavia and area firefighters battled a blaze on the rooftops of a Batavia home on Ekman Drive after a lightning bolt smashed through its roof shortly after noon Wednesday, May 22. The fire is at a home at 932 Ekman Drive, just west of Ekman's intersection with Raddant Road. The home is located just north of a neighborhood park. Firefighters at the scene said the fire was believed to have been caused by a lightning strike, and that was confirmed by Richard Bandur, the witness who phoned 911. "I was sitting at the kitchen table, (and saw) a big, bright bolt of lightning—my back was actually to the park," Bandur said. "I thought, ‘Wow, that was close.’ I took a look to see if one of these large trees out here was hit, and I saw a real little…

Cadence Fitness and Health Center Closed for the Day Due to Odor of Flooring Work

Cadence Fitness and Health Center—formerly known as Delnor Wellness Center—is closed Wednesday due to a strong odor associated with some interior improvements. No danger, but the facility is closed for the day.

Cadence Fitness and Health Center was evacuated and closed shortly before noon Wednesday, May 22, due to a strong odor associated with some interior design work, officials said. No one was in any danger, but Geneva Fire Department personnel reported to the scene. "The odor was caused by some floors that were being refinished," said Cadence spokesperson Christopher King said. "So we're closed for today but we'll be open tomorrow at 5 a.m." Tri-Com scanner reports indicated that there was no danger to anyone in the building at any time. "The odor was just stronger than expected, and that's why (Fire Department personnel) were there," King said. "It was a pracautionary thing to check and make sure everything was OK." Murder-Suicide Victim's Family Suing North Aurora Supportive Living Center

The family claims Eden should have taken steps to protect residents.

The family of the 50-year-old victim of a murder-suicide in October is suing the Eden Supporting Living Center in North Aurora, where she was killed. According to a report in The Beacon-News, the family of Tomi Vandiver is saying the assisted living community should have expelled her boyfriend and suspected murder, 58-year-old Jon Neel, because of his previous violent history. Vandiver was stabbed to death Oct. 29, 2012, in the living center at 311 S. Lincolnway St., North Aurora. Neel died when he jumped out of a third-story window on that same day. Vandiver had a romantic relationship with Neel, according to an initial investigation. She went to his apartment to gather some of her things early in the evening on Oct. 29 before she planned…

Chicago Bears veteran of 13 years Brian Urlacher officially retired Wednesday morning, according to CBS Chicago. The 34-year-old linebacker says he has no regrets ending a professional career playing exclusively for the Chicago Bears. “Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards,” Urlacher told CBS news. Legislation to Ban Teen Tanning in Illinois Heads to Gov. Quinn

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.

Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition.
