GAME DAY: Geneva Vs. St. Charles East—A Rivalry Revisited

A historic rivalry between two neighbor schools takes on special meaning this year as the Vikings struggle to a 1-4 start and the Saints are riding high.

A rivalry game that once was is a rivalry game reborn tonight. The Geneva Vikings haven't missed a playoff berth since 2003. But after a 25-6 loss a week ago at St. Charles North, Geneva is 1-4 overall and needs to win every game through the remainder of the season to have even a chance of sneaking in this year. St. Charles East, meanwhile, is off to a good start in 2012—3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Upstate Eight River Division. Coach Mike Fields, a former Vikings assistant, has every right to talk like Darth Vader did to Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first Star Wars movie: "The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner. Now, I am the master." Decades ago, when Jerry Auchstetter used the Force in Geneva, the Vikings and Saints …

On Sept. 11, 2012, Does Your Family Have a Plan If the Unthinkable Happens?

Kane County Health Department offers safety tips for National Preparedness Month.

On Sept. 11, 2012, the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, the Kane County Health Department is joining organizations throughout the country in reminding families to have a plan for any emergency situation.  Now, during September, National Preparedness Month, is a good time to plan in advance so that everybody knows what to do and where to go if unthinkable happens. Emergency experts have four sayings to help families prepare for natural and manmade disasters: Get Informed, Make a Plan, Get a Kit and Get Involved. This week, the Health Department is focusing on making the all-important plan. How will you get to a safe place? How will you contact one another? How will you get back together? And what will you do in …

Blue Moon Takes to the Sky Friday Night

A blue moon will shine down on St. Charles on Friday night. The next blue moon won't occur until 2015.

Just as the moon isn’t made of cheese, it isn’t usually blue either, but on Friday the phrase, "once in a blue moon" will apply. August will end with the second full moon of the month. The month of August started with a full moon, with the first one taking place on Aug. 1, and ends with the full moon Friday. Modern folklore has dubbed the occurrence of two full moons in a month as a blue moon, according to the science website EarthSky.org. The blue moon happens only every two to three years. The next blue moon isn’t expected until July 2015. The moon may be doubly blue Friday, which is when the funeral service for Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is scheduled, according to Politico. Armstrong died Saturday at age 82. A …

UPDATE: More Kane County Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile

The total is up to five positive batches of West Nile Virus collected in Kane County traps this year. Here's the latest.

Three more batches (or pools) of mosquitoes collected this week have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department reported Friday, July 13. The mosquito batches were collected in Kane County Health Department traps in Aurora, Montgomery and Carpentersville. This brings the total to five positive batches this year, the second in from Carpentersville. These positive mosquito batches usually are the first indicators of West Nile activity. "With this year’s hot, dry weather, these results come as no surprise," the Kane County Health Department press release said. "We usually see our first evidence of West Nile beginning in July or August. And although it has been extraordinarily dry, the few intermittent showers we’ve…

Photo Gallery: Happy Birthday, Geneva City Hall!

Geneva celebrates the 100th anniversary of City Hall with a time-capsule opening, re-dedication and community photo. The celebration and tours went until noon May 19—with Gardenology throughout town the rest of the day.

If you're having a birthday party, you have to have a photo of the birthday girl or boy, with relatives gathered around, bearing gifts and well-wishes. And that's no different for Geneva's City Hall, which turns 100 today. Far more than 100 guests and well-wishers gathered to have their photos taken for posterity and for admission into the time capsule that will be buried at City Hall and opened again in another 100 years. City Hall also was re-dedicated, with a plaque honoring Chuck Lencioni, the longtime building commissioner, volunteer firefighter and community servant. In his opening remarks, Mayor Kevin Burns called City Hall the community's "front porch," a piece of Americana that never goes out of style, in some ways looking very …

Model Seder Experience Open to All on April 1 in Geneva

The Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors tell the Passover story in an upcoming model Seder.

Swarms of locusts, hail storms, promises broken, waters parted … these are just some of the highlights of the Passover story which children will hear during the upcoming model seder during religious school on Sunday, April 1, at Fox Valley Jewish School (FVJS).   Want to hear more? Anyone wishing to learn and experience a bit of what Passover seder is all about is welcome to attend, along with the students and parents of this school run by Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors (FVJN), in downtown Geneva. In Jewish schools and synagogues around the world, children sit down and participate in what is called a “model seder.” The idea behind the model seder is to provide a simulation of the family seder that will allow students to learn about the parts …

Weather Alert: Snow Is Coming—Up to 3 Inches, Lousy Friday Commute Home

OK, now that we've seen the fourth-warmest January in all of history, we're getting snow and subzero temperatures, starting Feb. 10.

It's going to be a crummy commute when you come home today, Friday, Feb. 10. Expect about 1 to 2 inches in Kane County through this afternoon. Snowfall is likely this afternoon into the early evening in Kane County. There could be as much as 6 inches near the lake. The NWS-Chicago has issued a Hazardous Weather Warning to go along with the snow. There will be cool temps tonight, as well as Saturday night into Sunday morning. Looking ahead, more light snow Monday and Tuesday. All of this follows the news that we saw the fourth-warmest January of all time. Still, you have to worry a little about the plants that began to bud recently and the birds, which are already singing their spring love songs. It's been a whacky—and out of whack—winter, …
