But moderate rankings in two other categories mean that the county ranks only sixth healthiest overall in the state, a new report shows.
DuPage County is the sixth healthiest of Illinois’ 102 counties and ranks first in three categories, according to a national study released on Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI). The study found that DuPage has the lowest rate of premature death, the best heath behaviors and the best clinical care of any county in Illinois. However, the rankings for morbidity (25th of 102) and physical environment (64th of 102) brought the county’s overall rank down to sixth, behind Douglas, Jo Daviess, Woodford, Mercer and Henry. “The County Health Rankings shows that how long and how well people live depends on multiple factors beyond just their access to medical care…

Reboletti wants to disband the Forest Commission, Conroy wants to get rid of commissioners' pay.
State Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-45th, of Elmhurst last week sponsored HB 2481, which would dissolve the DuPage County Forest Preserve District Board and transfer the responsibilities of the Forest District to the DuPage County Board in 2016. In response late Friday, the DuPage Legislative Committee scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, Feb. 26, to discuss the bill. "Before legislation of this magnitude is voted on in Springfield, I think it is important that all sides of the issue are explored," said Legislative Committee Chairman JR McBride in a prepared statement. "While I am open to the idea of a study to analyze a possible merger, I do not believe this bill has any merit until due diligence has been given on the subject." Reboletti …

Although unemployment is down from a year ago, October 2012 numbers increased slightly from the prior month.
Jobless rates in Illinois increased slightly from September 2012 to October but still are down from a year earlier, according to new figures released last week. October local unemployment rates fell in every metro area compared to last year, according to data released by the U.S. Labor Department and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. In Kane County’s portion of St. Charles, the jobless rate rose a half of a percentage point from September to October 2012; but October’s numbers dropped 1.4 points from a year earlier. In the DuPage County portion of the city, there was no month-to-month change, although unemployment dropped 3.9 percentage points from October 2011 to October 2012. “Falling unemployment rates across our state and…

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Hearing the words, "I'm sorry, but it's cancer," comes as a shock to anyone, and I never thought I would hear them that day. I was in my mid-40s, a marathon runner, healthy eater, non-smoker, no family history. The only real risk factor I had was giving birth to my first child after age 30. I cried (hysterically), I went for a long run the next morning, I got a second opinion, I told only a handful of people and I went about my busy life trying not to think about it. I made a list of other women I knew who had fought – or were fighting – this awful disease. In a few moments, I came up with more than 15 names of women in my community, most of whom were right around my age. Clearly, I was not alone…

St. Charles posted greater-than-average gains compared with averages for DuPage and Kane counties, the state and the nation.
Illinois' unemployment rate remains above 8 percent, but most communities saw a decrease in jobless residents in September 2012, according to new figures released last week. September local unemployment rates fell in every metro area compared to last year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. "This month's report highlights that we have made steady progress in lowering the unemployment rate, but more needs to be done," IDES Director Jay Rowell said in a news release. "Hiring managers need to see consistent, long-term tax policy and spending priorities by the federal government before we will see stronger hiring increases." IDES generally reports unemployment figures …
