Monday afternoon's gas leak along the East Main Street/Route 64 reconstruction was the second caused by construction crews this month and the third since August. City officials hoped to reopen East Main Street/Route 64 by midnight Monday after a construction crew struck a 6-inch, high-pressure natural gas main during midafternoon, forcing the thoroughfare’s closure between 9th and 13th avenues and prompting the evacuation of several businesses. St. Charles Fire Department interim Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said late Monday that the incident was reported at 2:28 p.m. Firefighters remained at the scene late into the evening, using monitoring equipment to take readings of natural gas levels to ensure the perimeter was wide enough while the …

Route 64 reconstruction resumes Monday for its final season, as year-long project to build an overpass on Route 38 between Geneva and West Chicago.
If you’ve become used to a little less congestion and a little easier driving along East Main Street over the past three months, prepare to change lanes and shift into low gear: The Route 64 reconstruction project begins its third and final season Monday. And there’s another shoe falling this year: A year-long construction project on Route 38 with complete the one-two punch to east-west access on main thoroughfares in the area. A little more than a week ago, the city issued a release saying work would resume the week of March 25. On Friday, St. Charles Engineering Manager James Bernahl of the Department of Public Works wrote in an email that the Illinois Department of Transporation’s contractor is set to resume work Monday, after a …

The plan is to make the shift, east of Kautz Road, by Dec. 19.
Work continues on the East Main Street/Route 64 reconstruction project in St. Charles, according to St. Charles Public Works Engineering Manager James Bernahl, who said in his weekly email update that much of the work along this corridor has been focused on the upcoming traffic pattern change east of Kautz Road. Bernahl wrote that in the coming week, the contractor will be focusing on tightening things up for the holiday week. Here is Bernahl’s rundown on what to expect: 38th Avenue to Route 59 Bernahl said the contractor is scheduling to frame and pour turn lanes, curb and gutter, driveways, and the base course for the north and south sides of East Main Street from 38th Avenue to the Kautz Road/Smith Road intersection. The remaining …

The closure between Smith and Kautz Road eastbound to Powis Road detoured hordes of traffic Tuesday afternoon.
By Tuesday afternoon, crews sealed the lesser of the two gas main breaks that prompted Route 64's closure at about noon along and east of the Pheasant Run Resort. According to a release authorized by St. Charles Fire Chief Patrick Mullen, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, crews shut down the gas leak at 4051 E. Main St. "... However Route 64 remains closed between Kautz Road and Route 59 due to the larger break at Powis Road and Route 64," the release states. "Traffic to local businesses in the closed area is being allowed. It is anticipated that work will continue" until 3:46 p.m. to 5:46 p.m on Tuesday. The detour for the incident on the St. Charles side is either northbound on Smith Road or southbound on Kautz Road. Mullen said in an earlier …

I was on north avenue at the leak while firefighters and construction workers seemed to be standing around waiting for direction. They did not immediately close north avenue when this hapened. After i saw the tremendous force of gas spewing high into the air and my children were gagging at the smell that had seeped into the car, i quickly turned onto a side street. My assumption is that gas leaks…   more ›
